Keynote speaker Attorney Raymond J. Dowd will discuss the story behind Nazi confiscated art, through forced and coerced transfers, and the ethical and legal expectations of its return to its lawful owners.

Raymond J. Dowd is a partner in the law firm of Dunnington Bartholow & Miller LLP in New York City.  He served as lead trial counsel in notable cases involving art law, copyrights, trademarks, and other matters. He has litigated questions of Austrian, Canadian, French, German, Italian, Russian and Swiss law and handled contentious matters including recovering an ancient Assyrian tablet for the Pergamon Museum in Berlin.   Sine if his lectures on Nazi art looting include: 2009 Prague Conference on Holocaust-Era Assets, Jewish Museum (Berlin), Yad Vashem (Jerusalem), )Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, San Francisco War Memorial, Sorbonne (Paris) and any chapters of the Federal Bar Association.

Howard Lupovitch – Moderator

Howard Lupovitch is Associate Professor of History and Director of the Cohn-Haddow Center for Judaic Studies at Wayne State University.  A fourth-generation Detroit, Professor Lupovitch is a graduate of Hillel Day School, the University of Michigan, and Columbia University, where he received a PhD in History.  Professor Lupovitch is the author, most recently, of “Jews and Judaism in World History.”
